The Institute for World Economics at the University Kiel (IfW) is with around 270 employees one of the big centres for world economics research and documentation.The institute's objective is the world scientific research, the economic-political guidance as well as documentation and provision of information in the area of international economical relations.

The institute addresses equally the international and the German science, the decision maker in politics and economy and the interested public.It has one of the world's most important economic and social-scientific libraries and a economics archive with an extensive collection of press cuttings.

The institute was founded in the year 1914 as "K�nigliches Institut f�r Seeverkehr und Weltwirtschaft" (Royal Institute for Maritime Traffic and World Economics) by Bernhard Harms and later re-named "Institut f�r Weltwirtschaft" (Institute for World Economics). The institute is affiliated to the Christian-Albrechts-Universityin Kiel, without being part of it. It belongs to the Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (WGL), which combines institute and service facility of nationwide importance.
The institute sees its main objective in the application-orientated economics research.Part of this is the empirical analysis economic-political relevant facts, the identifying and the analysis of possible future problem presentations, the 'thinking ahead'of economic-political solution and scientific innovation.
